Swine flu afflicts 202 SA citizens

MORE than 200 South Africans are being treated for swine flu, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases says

Nombuso Shabalala, the institute's spokesperson, said 129 of the 202 cases were in Gauteng.

Shabalala said the H1N1 strain of flu, often referred to as swine flu, was not a pandemic.

"It is not a pandemic like it was in 2009 - there was no vaccine then. Currently there is a vaccine which is easily available and will act as a protection against the flu," she said.

In 2009, swine flu claimed the lives of at least 91 South Africans, a third of them pregnant women.

  • A Johannesburg school has closed for a week after a breakout of mumps and swine flu, Beeld newspaper reports.

The King’s School, in Linbro Park, Sandton halted classes last week after at least six children contracted mumps and another two swine flu, said principal John Pilkington.

This week, another two children had contracted swine flu.

“We consulted with two medical doctors and asked if it would be a good idea to close the school for a few days,” Pilkington said.

He informed the Gauteng health department of the swine flu cases.
