Province loses out to boozing drivers

THE KwaZulu-Natal department of transport said yesterday its name-and-shame campaign had failed to "scare" motorists into sobriety

This month's name-and- shame list, which will be published in local newspapers, will feature the highest number of names and faces since the campaign was launched in February.

Despite the campaign 80 drunk drivers were arrested at the weekend during police roadblocks throughout Durban.

Provincial transport departmental spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the department was now working towards developing more intense law enforcement strategies to promote road safety.

"We have been publishing the names of motorists guilty of drunken driving since February on the last day of each month. The campaign continues but people are still drinking and driving," he said.

He said at most horror accident scenes liquor bottles were found in the vehicles, which suggests that the driver or passengers could have been drunk.
