Evicted granny goes home

A LIMPOPO grandmother who was evicted from her house has gone back home - "in the meantime"

The Legal Aid Board said it was agreed that Thabitha Kekana should go back to her home while the board fights to have a judgment against her rescinded.

Kekana, 70, has now moved back into the house in Sekgakgapeng village near Mokopane pending the re-opening of the case.

Kekana was evicted from her house last Monday by the sheriff of the court following a family dispute.

The house had been given to her by her late mother-in-law. Kekana's husband died in 1998 while her mother-in-law died in 2006.

Before her mother-in-law's death, the house was registered in her name.

Matters came to a head when her brother-in-law claimed ownership of the house and Kekana was served with a summons.

But, through a misunderstanding, Kekana did not make any court appearance, resulting in judgment being passed in her absence.

She was then thrown out onto the street with all her belongings. Neighbours gave her shelter.

After reading the story in Sowetan last week, the Legal Aid Board came into the picture to assist her in applying for a rescission of the court judgment.

The board's Venice Netshiunda said yesterday that the Legal Aid Board had filed an application for a rescission of the judgment with conditions that the pensioner returned to the house "in the meantime".

The ecstatic granny yesterday thanked Sowetan for highlighting her plight. "I do not have proper words to describe my happiness. Thanks a lot for your assistance."

Community leader Levycent Chepana said they would ensure that Kekana went to court on June 29.
