A man (25) was found dead in an open field. Female underwear and clothing was found next to him

Three men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old man whose body was found in Potchefstroom, North West police said today.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lesego Metsi said six men were taken in for questioning on Monday after the murder of Elliot Van Rooyen in Ikageng township on Sunday morning.     Three of them were released later on Monday, he said.

Van Rooyen was found by a passerby in an open field behind a community hall at 6.15am on Sunday. He had sustained multiple stab wounds.

Police found female underwear and clothing next to his body.

Metsi said police had reason to believe that an unknown woman had been with Van Rooyen and that she was also killed.

The three men arrested, aged between 20 and 30, told police they saw the woman and threw her body into a dam or bushes. However, a search had revealed nothing of her whereabouts.
