ANC rejects move over teachers' pay

THE ANC in Mpumalanga has opposed a motion by the DA aimed at ensuring all temporary teachers are paid their salaries.

The ANC used its majority to oppose and defeat a DA motion calling on the house to condemn the non-payment of teachers' salaries.

On Friday, the DA tabled a motion calling on the legislature to not only condemn the non-payment of the salaries, but also to instruct education MEC, Regina Mhaule to personally ensure all teachers are added to the government's PERSAL system to avoid a repeat of this situation this month.

The DA also wanted Mhaule to ensure that all teachers who had not been issued with letters of appointment got them within 30 days and also to ensure that all outstanding salaries were paid by no later than today.

Thousands of temporary teachers in the province were not paid in February. This is the second month that salaries of temporary teachers have been delayed.

But education department spokesperson Jasper Zwane said the department had already implemented some of the payments in February before the treasury closed the PERSAL supplementary runs on February 16.
