Sentencing delay for Hlope junior

Sentencing in the fraud trial of Thuthuke Exton Hlophe, the son of Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe, has been delayed again

The 27-year-old Hlophe, a final-year BCom student at the University of SA (Unisa), awaits sentencing on six counts of fraud,  one of defeating the ends of justice and one of violating the Identification Act.

He was found guilty in the Bellville Regional Court in September, when a date suggested by prosecutor Sylvan Africa for sentencing proceedings did not suit Hlophe as it clashed with his examination schedule.

At Monday’s proceedings, defence attorney TS Sidaki said a correctional supervision report had been completed, but another by the National Institute of Crime Prevention and the Re-integration of Offenders (Nicro) was still outstanding.

At the request of a Nicro official at the hearing, the case was postponed to June 22 for sentencing proceedings to begin.

The official told the court that Hlophe would write his final exams in April and May.

On one fraud count, Hlophe bought a R400,000 luxury car in a private transaction, but paid the R24,629 deposit with two dud cheques.

On another, his R4,070 cheque for the purchase of eucalyptus wooden boards was dishonoured, and on a third fraud charge he bought a used scooter with a cheque that was also dishonoured.

On three other fraud charges, he gave false information, including a fake salary slip that reflected his salary as R32,522, in order to obtain a loan at Capitec.

He later falsely informed the police that his surname was Ntombela, which gave rise to the charge of defeating the ends of justice.
