FORMER SABC group chief executive officer Solly Mokoetle has been tipped for a position as director-general in the Ministry of Communications

Although the ministry yesterday dismissed the news as just a rumour, Sowetan can reveal that Mokoetle will take up the post.

Yesterday, the ministry praised Mokoetle for resigning as chief executive of the cash-strapped broadcaster.

Mokoetle announced his resignation from the SABC on Wednesday, saying it would save him and the broadcaster from a long court battle.

A move that a source said was a hint that Mokoetle was the "right man" for the job.

Communications Minister Roy Padayachee said he believed that it was "time to open a new page and start a new chapter and work towards ensuring that the SABC returns to normality".

Last night, Mokoetle said he did not know about the job.

Ministry's spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso said the position would be filled soon.

"The minister's main priority is to ensure that the vacancy rate is attended to. The rumour is far-fetched."

Cope MP in communications Juli Killian said the appointment would be irregular.

"There was no advertisement. The proper procedures would not have been followed and Cope will regard the appointment as irregular," Killian said.
