Schools of shame are named

Here are the schools where NONE of their Matrics passed the exams

No pupils passed the 2010 matric exams at 18 schools, according to figures released by the basic education department on Thursday.

Five of these were in the Eastern Cape, six in Limpopo and four were in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Free State, Western Cape and Gauteng had one each.

The number of schools with a zero pass was unchanged from 2009.

According to the Report on the National Senior Certificate Examinations, the sizes of the schools that registered zero pass rates varied, from one school at which only 2 pupils sat the exams to one where 238 pupils sat the exams.

According to the report, the schools with a zero pass rate in the Eastern Cape were:

  • Msobomvu High School in the East London teaching district,
  • Mpingana Senior Secondary School in Lusikisiki,
  • Mzamomhle Senior Secondary in Butterworth,
  • Nqabane Senior Secondary  School in Dutywa, and the
  • Riebeeck East Public School in the Grahamstown district.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the report listed:

  • St Martin de Porres Comprehensive in the Ugu district,
  • Siyazizamela Secondary School in  the Vryheid district,
  • Amazizi High School and
  • VN Naik School for the Deaf in the Umlazi district.

In Limpopo, the zero-pass rate schools were:

  • Magandangele High School in the Maune teaching district,
  • Phosane Secondary in the Nokotlou district,
  • Hlabirwa Commercial in the Seotlong district,
  • the Wilmary Christian Learning  Centre in the Soutpansberg West district, and
  • Boithuto Intermediate  School in the Baltimore district.

In Gauteng, Northview High School in the Johannesburg East teaching district and, in the Free State the Headstart High School in Motheo region, both registered a zero pass rate. In the Western Cape, the report listed the Dominican Grimley School in the Metropole Central Region as having no matric passes.

The overall matric pass rate for 2010 stood at 67.8%.
