A PORT Elizabeth mother, who was allegedly drunk when a family dog mauled her three-month-old child, has been charged with child neglect, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

The child was in a serious condition in hospital and the police could not yet arrest the mother who was minding the infant, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said.

It is believed the mother and her two sisters were drunk. One of the four dogs in the house bit the child, severely damaging his testicles.

Community members alerted the police about the incident.
