Mob kills man after he 'hanged a friend'

THE FAMILY of a Sebokeng, Vaal, man say they are angry at residents who killed him after he had allegedly hanged his friend.

Abel Nkuna's relatives said he should have been handed over to the police rather than being stoned and beaten to death by an angry mob.

Lolo Mokoena said she was shocked that her uncle died such a brutal death.

"I was shocked and stood by helplessly when an angry mob armed with all sorts of weapons, including rocks and stones, attacked my uncle. I tried to stop them and pleaded with them not to kill him, but they pushed me aside and continued stoning him."

Mokoena said she was at her house on Sunday morning when she was called by her brother to rush to Nkuna's house.

She was told that Nkuna, 38, had killed his friend Simon Mkhwanazi, 20.

"When I arrived there I saw Mkhwanazi's family at the gate crying. I asked what was happening and went inside where I saw a group of people assaulting my uncle.

"They told me that they were killing a dog which had killed an innocent person," Mokoena said.

Her cousin Zwelakhe Nkuna said he saw Mkhwanazi hanging by an electric cord from the roof in his uncle's bedroom.

The family said they were shocked that Nkuna could have hanged Mkhwanazi as they were friends.

"I was told by Nkuna's neighbours that after he had hanged Mkhwanazi he went outside and screamed that he had killed a dog," he said.

"Residents then came and saw Mkhwanazi's body hanging in his bedroom and started assaulting him."

Zwelakhe said when he arrived his uncle was lying face down in a pool of blood with gaping wounds in the back of his head. His body had multiple wounds.

"Nobody has a right to kill anyone like that. If he is guilty of murder they should have handed him over to the police and let the law take its course," he said.

Mkhwanazi's father Jacob said he did not approve of what the community had done but he was angry to have a lost a child.

"I am speechless at what happened in that house. I am hurting because I have lost a son who I don't have money to bury," he said.

Captain Bheki Thwala said they have arrested four people for Nkuna's killing who will appear in the Sebokeng magistrate's court soon on charges of murder.
