Women want a man 'who can provide'

THERE is a widespread perception that black professional women cannot keep their men.

This was the topic at the Youth Indaba hosted by the Black Youth Forum in Gugulethu at Lucas Mbembe Community Hall this week.

The forum seeks to create a platform for young people to discuss issues that affect them.

"The aim is to find solutions to the myths," said Sindiswa Mpendla, one of the founders of the organisation.

A participant said men felt less than men if their women were successful and "they then decide to kill them".

Thabiso Geqe said South Africans came from a colonial, apartheid and patriarchal society where for years women were treated as sex objects.

"The only thing that was expected from a woman was children. They were never seen or heard as equal to men. This was motivated by culture and a primitive era."

Sikelela Zokufa said: "Women don't want to depend on men. They want to rule themselves. They want to be independent to do whatever they want. This is not good because it leads to illegitimate kids."

Bongiwe Ndevu said she did not want to get married.

"Women don't want a man who does not have anything. We want a man who can provide for the family. We don't want a man who is going to sit in your house and eat your money."

Mpendla said the indaba was held during the festive season because that is when people sit and discuss issues.

"It does not mean because people were on holiday that controversial issues should not be discussed. This topic that black women who happen to be professionals cannot keep men is discussed at social gatherings."
