'Killer' faces 61 charges, including rape

FOR two years Jack Madumetsa Mogale allegedly masterminded a reign of terror on women in Westonaria and Lenasia, west of Johannesburg.

He "lured his victims under false pretences to accompany him, whereafter he assaulted them, raped them, (and) in some instances robbed them of their belongings and then murdered and/or attempted to murder them", according to court papers read at the beginning of his trial in the Johannesburg high court yesterday.

Mogale, 42, cut a lonely figure in the dock as state prosecutor Elaine Moonsamy read out the charges .

Mogale faces 16 counts of murder, 18 counts of kidnapping, 19 of rape, one of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, one of sexual assault and a count of fraud (alternatively theft).

He also faces a charge of attempted murder, another of escaping from lawful custody and three of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Speaking in North Sotho, Mogale told the court "I know nothing of the charges against me".

He pleaded "not guilty".

On March 17 2008 Mogale allegedly kidnapped, robbed, raped and murdered a woman at the Waterworks station after she had exited a train on her way home.

She was the main witness in a fraud case against him.

Mogale also allegedly raped and murdered 16 other women, as well as a child.

The court heard how the accused pretended to be a "healer", promising to help his victims with their ailments before luring them to a bush and raping and then killing them. One victim survived an attack.

The matter was postponed to Monday.
