Producer get 10 years for rape in music studio

A MUSIC producer was sentenced to 10 years in jail yesterday for raping an aspiring singer - in the studio.

The Groblersdal magistrate's court found Jonas "Maseven" Maleka guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl who had gone to record her debut album in his home studio.

Maleka, of Spitspunt in the Moutse area of Limpopo, was arrested together with his co-accused, Piet Sebothoma.

The court heard that last year, the girl, now 17, desperately wanted to record a gospel album and was told by friends that Maleka could make her dream a reality as he had already produced many other artists.

The victim said that on that fateful night of April 18 she arrived at Maleka's house in Spitspunt at 8pm.

"Maleka suggested (we record) late at night, saying it was less noisy," she said.

"When I arrived at the house, I found him with Sebothoma and I asked that we start recording.

"We recorded and at around 11pm, he suggested that we take a break and have some drinks.

"I said I was fine and did not want anything to eat or drink and after about an hour, he resumed recording until about 1am."

She said she told the two men that she was tired and asked that they stop for the night and continue recording the following day.

"I was supposed to sleep with my friend who lives a few blocks from Maleka's home and when I told him I was going he became aggressive, grabbed me and pressed me down, and pulled my pants and panty off before raping me," she said.

"After that Maleka told Sebothoma to also come and have sex with me.

"When he refused, Maleka slapped him twice in the face and threatened to shoot him. Sebothoma also raped me."

The case against Sebothoma, who has pleaded not guilty, has been referred to another magistrate.
