MEC defends expenses

GAUTENG health department has failed to provide evidence of tangible assets worth more than R600million, the department revealed in its annual report yesterday.

The department also failed to provide evidence of intangible assets worth more than R100million in its 2009-10 financial year.

It also incurred R400million in irregular expenditures as a result of failure to adhere to prescribed procurement processes.

Defending the unauthorised expenditure of more than R2billion, MEC Qedani Mahlangu said: "It is expected because of the nature of the service the department provides."

She said the under-expenditure of R6,5million in the emergency medical services, health training and science could have been caused by termination of jobs and cancellation of contracts.

Mahlangu said the department had managed to reduce maternal, infant and child mortality by increasing dedicated obstetrics ambulances.
