MUNICIPALITIES that underperform or fail to provide jobs to communities will get less or no incentive from the R4billion increment that has been made available to implement Phase 2 of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
This warning was made yesterday by Public Works Minister Geoff Doidge during his address at the opening of a three-day EPWP summit at Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.
Doidge said the bulk of the money would go to the municipalities and provinces that provide more jobs.
He, however, made it clear that they want rural municipalities to benefit more from the incentive.
The municipalities must commit themselves to achieving the goal of creating 642000 job opportunities before the end of this financial year.
The main aim of the programme is to create 4,5million job opportunities by 2014.
Doidge said that of the country's 283 municipalities, 52 district municipalities and 231 local municipalities have reported the implementation of the programme, and it was not clear why the other 103 municipalities have not reported.
He said they aim to achieve a 100percent report back by municipalities.
