He gave his life for his people

LATE Limpopo businessman Frans Mohale has been described as a generous person who dedicated his life and resources to the upliftment of communities in which he lived.

Mohale was buried in a dignified funeral in Longtill township near Steelpoort in Limpopo on Saturday. He was the first husband of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

Mohale died in a car accident on September 8 on a road near GaMoretsele while on his way from Bolobedu. He would have turned 55 yesterday.

Nkoana-Mashabane was among the thousands of mourners who descended on the tiny township to pay their last respects to Mohale, together with three of the four children she had with him. The fourth died three years ago in an accident with Nkoana-Mashabane's husband, Norman Mashabane.

Mohale was described as a person whose intention was to eradicate poverty in the community in which he lived.

He was born in GaSekgopo village in Bolobedu, but in 1981 he relocated to Steelpoort. He first operated two butcheries in the area, in which he used to mobilise communities to fight against the former apartheid regime. He served in underground ANC structures until the unbanning of the organisation, albeit having been arrested several times for his political activism.

He established the Nkwe Platinum Mine in 2006, which was originally listed in the Australian Stock Exchange.
