VERACRUZ - At least eight people have died in clashes between soldiers and a drug gang close to where 72 migrants were massacred last week, the Mexican military said.

The clashes began on Sunday night in the city of Panuco, bordering the Tamaulipas state which has seen an eruption of violence, including explosives attacks and the murder of a mayor in recently.

Six suspects and a soldier were killed and five soldiers wounded. The eighth victim was identified as a civilian caught in the crossfire.

The soldiers were attacked with grenades and guns when they arrived at an alleged safe house following a tip-off.

Blame for the massacre of 72 migrants last week fell on the Zetas drug gang - set up by former soldiers.
