Ex-Concourt judge buried

FORMER Constitutional Court judge Tholi Madala was buried in an emotional ceremony at his hometown of Mthatha in Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Madala, 74, who retired from the Concourt in 2008, died last Wednesday. He was the first black judge in Eastern Cape and was appointed to the Concourt by then president Nelson Mandela in 1994.

The Black Lawyers Association, of which he was a board member, described him as a man of the people who was emotionally and culturally attached to his birthplace, Transkei.

The Law Society of SA said that even after retiring Madala had retained close ties with the legal profession and was always available to engage with lawyers, reminding them of the importance of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

LSSA's Max Boqwana and Peter Horn said in a joint statement: "We lower our flag in his honour and extend our heartfelt condolences on behalf of the attorneys' profession to Justice Madala's family, children and grandchildren."
