Memorial for Amy Biehl

A BRONZE plaque has been unveiled at the Cape Town site where a white American Fulbright scholar was killed by black South Africans in apartheid's waning days.

At yesterday's ceremony, US ambassador Donald Gips said Amy Biehl was committed to helping build a free South Africa.

Biehl's mother, Linda Biehl, said she was grateful for the memorial, but "the children of this community are our monument".

Yesterday marked the 17th anniversary of her death. The Amy Biehl Foundation was established by her family in 1997, providing arts and sports training to more than 1500 young people in and around Gugulethu.
