Cop writes off State car in 'drunk joyride'

A Mpumalanga policeman allegedly stole a state vehicle for a joyride before being arrested for drunken driving.

Constable David Makhabane, 30, stationed at KaBokweni police station, allegedly took an unmarked police car on Friday.

Lieutenant-Colonel Chris Mabasa said: "It seems the member was enjoying himself because the car tracking company later told us the state car had been driven for the whole night in the Barberton area."

He said Makhabane drove into a roadblock, was arrested for alleged drunken driving and granted R2,000 bail.

After paying bail, Makhabane continued with his joyride, but had a crash in Nelspruit.

"The state car is a write-off."

Makhabane reported for work yesterday and "investigations revealed he was lying, so I personally arrested him".

He was granted another bail release of R2,000.
