Rural art market in Nelspruit

IT'S all systems go as Mpumalanga hosts a traditional art market to celebrate Heritage Month.

Speaking at a preview of the Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market (MTAM) held at Museum Africa on Friday, Nomvula Cook said: "The market is not another Rosebank or Bruma. It will showcase quality projects from various provinces."

She said the MTAM would take place from September 3 to 5 at the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Nelspruit.

"The market empowers rural women and men crafters. It also gives them hope," Cook said.

Renowned writer, poet and sculptor Pitika Ntuli was present at the event.

Poet Walter Chakela said the festival was one of the few events that celebrated black art.

"It is great that the market is not happening in Johannesburg but in Mpumalanga," he said.

Thelma Ngcobo, chairperson of the board of MTAM, said the art market was a true homage to rural development.
