THE Congress of the People at Amaoti, north of Durban, has called for an investigation into allegations of corruption and maladministration of housing tenders.
Ward 53 Cope branch chairperson Bheki Mteki is accusing local councillor Zandile Gumede of allegedly being involved in the tender process to develop a transit camp for informal settlements in the area. A transit camp is where land is identified for low-cost housing and infrastructure installed prior to housing development.
Mteki said the housing development had not progressed because of infighting between Gumede and the local branch executive committee of the ANC.
"The project has stalled. The tender was not even awarded to local constructors, but was instead given to a contractor from Clermont," said Mteki.
He said Cope wanted eThekwini municipality to intervene. "We have also requested that MEC for community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu intervene."
Gumede, however, rejected the allegations: "I was neither involved in the tender process nor the appointment of a construction company to do work in the area."
She said the area was severely affected by floods and her role involved aspects relating to drainage.
"Drainage construction was done after houses were swept away in the floods. I only made an application to the relevant department, and the application was approved.
