Women farmers to be honoured

THE Limpopo department of agriculture will honour female farmers as part of Women's Month celebrations.

The department will give awards to women who play a vital role in the agricultural sector.

A ceremony will be held to highlight the role of the women in job creation and eradicating poverty .

The ceremony, which will be held at Bolivia Lodge outside Polokwane today, will also afford the women, together with agriculture MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and Premier Cassel Mathale, the opportunity to share their experiences on agriculture.

Speaking before the event, Letsatsi-Duba said women from Limpopo played an integral part of "our lives and freedom".

She said this year marks the 11th anniversary of the annual competition which has been instrumental in transforming the sector and introducing women to commercial agriculture.

She said as a tool of empowering women in the male-dominated sector, the awards will for the first time also acknowledge the best female worker of the year.

The event will be hosted with the SABC under the theme "Working together we can do more".

Musiwa Ramphela from the Vhembe region was last year's overall winner of the female farmer of the year .
