SEVERAL stores were burnt down in Hazyview complex in Mpumalanga at the weekend.

The affected stores include Shoe Zone, Truworth and the DStv offices, which were destroyed by a fire that started on Saturday afternoon.

Hazyview police spokesperson Constable Mpho Koli said the cause of the fire was still not known.

"The damage caused by the fire is estimated at R10million, excluding the goods that were burnt in each shop."

Koli said police were still investigating to establish the cause of the fire.

She said the owners had not yet provided police with details on the losses.

"We received a phone call informing us about the blaze.

"On arrival at the complex we found that the fire was still raging on. Everyone was running to get out of thecomplex."

Gabi Khoza, who was among people in the complex when the fire started, said she was withdrawing money from an ATM when she saw a big yellow ball of fire coming towards her direction.

"I was one of many people who were running for their lives. In fact, I am lucky to be alive because the situation was scary," she said.

Police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
