A QUICK response by police yesterday morning paid off when they arrested two of the four men who had hijacked a Ford Ranger LDV outside a pension payout point near the uMsunduzi police station.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker said police officers from the uMsunduzi police station responded when they heard gunshots at the payout point.
"When they arrived at the scene security guards informed them that four men had hijacked a Ford Ranger LDV outside the payout point.
"Security guards initially thought the suspects were trying to commit a robbery at the payout point and fired warning shots in the air.
"The suspects fled with the hijacked vehicle," Naicker said.
The police gave chase and when they started closing in the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush.
"The Police launched an intensive search of the area," Naicker said. "They were able to establish that two of the men had boarded a taxi.
"But the police managed to stop the taxi before it reached the rank and found the two inside.
"Two 9mm pistols with 10 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the men."
The two were arrested for car jacking and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
They were positively identified by the hijack victims.
By late afternoon yesterday the police were still searching for the other two suspects.
