Trio on robbery rap

THREE suspects, aged between 21 and 32, briefly appeared in the Ramsgate magistrate's court yesterday on charges of house robbery.

Siyabonga Mzobe, 32, Mazwi Mbali, 21, and Pecan Sikobi, 32, were arrested on Monday after terrorising the holiday resort on the South Coast during the June holidays.

Police received reports that holiday-makers were being robbed in Uvongo, Margate and Port Shepstone.

It is alleged that on June 16 a family from Rustenburg in North West, which was holidaying in Uvongo, was robbed by two men wearing balaclavas and gloves.

The men barged into the family's holiday home and demanded bank cards and pin codes.

The armed suspects also took cellphones, laptops, jewellery and other valuables before fleeing.

A week later a couple from Bloemfontein was robbed in Shelly Beach by two men using the same modus operandi.

The couple identified one suspect with a scar on his left arm and reported the matter to the police.

Investigations led the police to an Uvongo woman who had bought a stolen cellphone for R200 from an acquaintance.

She agreed to help the police and called the suspect, Mzobe, who was arrested on arrival.

He led the police to Mbali, who was also arrested.

The men claimed they worked for Sikobi.
