THE Anglo American and Sowetan Young Communicators Awards wagon will be in Mpumalanga this weekend.

Six national finalists who were chosen between May 8 and June 5 are due to be joined by three others from Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

These are Tshepo Mabuya from Free State, Ndumiso Mngomezulu from KwaZulu-Natal, Dineo Ratshwene from North West, Phuphu Mohlaba from Limpopo, Aisha Kholoane from Gauteng and Keoabetswe Lenyibi from Northern Cape. All these winners received R2000 each and their schools got R1000 each.

The last three YCA provincial heats will be held in Mpumalanga tomorrow, Eastern Cape on July 24 and Western Cape on July 31. The finals will take place in Johannesburg on August 20.

The awards's crucial sponsoring and organising partner is the national basic education department, with senior provincial education department officers serving as regional coordinators and playing a pivotal role in the workshops and provincial eliminations organised by youthful academic development service providers Model UN South Africa (Munsa).

Protea Hotels help the project with good discounts on accommodation and Anglo American's subsidiaries are provincial sponsors.

We thank the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo legislatures for hosting provincial contests. These venues served as appropriate role playing platforms for the participating and spectating youths.

We are also very grateful to the officials who addressed the pupils and who helped to inspire the children and enhanced their appreciation of the huge tasks leaders carry on their shoulders.
