ST JAMES HELPS AGED

ST JAMES Catholic Church in hosted a big party for its elderly parishioners at the weekend, thanks to Mama Angel.

The Magaliesburg church's guilds got together and decided to honour its senior parishioners, the aged.

"We sent their parcels home to those who did not come to church because it was cold. Some of them are very old," said Sophie Nyalane, who is on the church's pastoral care council.

She said some of the elderly were lonely and came to church to socialise. They form the backbone of the congregation.

Nyalane said it was a tradition at St James to take care of parents and the elderly. The church is situated in a poor area where many residents do not work and have not accessed social grants.

"We are in the bundu where we cannot follow new ideas about fundraising. We need clothes, food and blankets, anything to alleviate the poverty around us."

Nyalane said the council was planning similar functions for the youth.

"Father Joseph, our priest, is very supportive of our efforts and we often have a second collection."

Mama Angel donated blankets for the aged. Jeanette Daniels, a local resident, donated food for a hot lunch.

"We thank Sowetan for making the day special. Our mothers not only received a gift but a practical one that will keep them warm," Nyalane said.
