TWO Cape Town constables were injured when their bakkie overturned while they were chasing suspected wheel thieves, Netcare 911 said yesterday .

Spokesperson Lauren Copley said the incident happened at about 9pm on Tuesday.

The constables had been trying to arrest two men who had allegedly stolen wheels off a 4x4 vehicle at a car sales business in Plumstead.

She said the men made off in a Golf, and when police gave chase, the men threw the stolen wheels out of the car.

The Golf later crashed into the rear of the police vehicle, causing it to overturn on the corner of Blomvlei and Jan Smuts roads in Lansdowne.

Other police officers continued the chase and arrested the two men shortly afterwards on charges of attempted murder.

Copley said paramedics stabilised the constables, a man and a woman, on scene.

"They sustained moderate neck and shoulder injuries and were transported by ambulance to Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic," she said.

Police could not immediately confirm the details of the incident. - Sapa
