Pandor was expected to visit the area on Friday after a local community organisation asked for the donation for the Mount Ernestina Combined, the Sheshisamsamo and Siphakeme schools, her spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele said yesterday.
During a meeting with maths and science teachers last week, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga was told that while pupils did well in these subjects, they failed them at universities.
Moses Kotane Institute chief executive Professor Albert Modi told the meeting that well-trained teachers and facilities like laboratories were crucial.
The institute was established in January 2009 to improve maths and science in KwaZulu-Natal's schools.
"We have pupils who pass maths and science with flying colours, but they fail dismally when they go to the universities because schools do not have labs."
The lack of laboratories meant pupils were taught to memorise science. Modi urged the government to buy mobile science and biology laboratories which cost R40000 each. Each mobile laboratory, or cart, was fitted with high-quality educational software for teaching theory, a USB camera, and a projector.
Teachers would be able to perform about 131 science experiments while projecting live images, captured by the USB camera, onto a classroom wall. - Sapa
