Mayor grilled over state-funded burgers

THE net is closing in on an IFP mayor who is said have an extraordinary appetite for burgers, which he consumes at taxpayers' expense.

THE net is closing in on an IFP mayor who is said have an extraordinary appetite for burgers, which he consumes at taxpayers' expense.

The mayor is said to be satisfying his insatiable appetite for Kentucky fries and Steers burgers using municipality's funds.

This was revealed yesterday by KwaZulu-Natal standing committee on public accounts chairperson Makhosi Khoza.

Khoza revealed that the auditor-general had completed the 2009-10 financial audits for municipalities.

She said her committee, with municipalities' Scopas, would deal with a range of financial mismanagement issues arising from the A-G's reports, "which is in the interests of cooperative and good governance".

"Working together will go a long way to building the municipal oversight capacity so as to improve the financial position of municipalities, which will in turn lead to better quality and more services for our citizens and clients.

"I have learnt with utmost disgust about the mayor of a particular municipality in our province who feeds his burger appetite out of the public purse.

"The mayor is said to be nursing his love for Kentucky and Steers at the expense of the public - and we have the relevant receipts in this regard.

"I'm calling on all public officials to stop abusing the public purse," Khoza said.

She said the available public resources were far outstripped by the basic services demands of the people.

"Every cent has to be saved, especially to address the water crisis in our province," she said.

"We still have a large number of communities that do not have access to clean water.

"As chairperson of Scopa, together with members of the provincial legislature and municipalities' Scopas, we are going to work hard to ensure that we tighten all screws to stop the public purse from bleeding to death."

She assured members of the public that she would soon get all the details and would name and shame people like the said mayor.

"We have requested the department of cooperative governance to provide detailed information on this saga," she said.
