Dual membership is killing the ANC

THE factional fighting within the ANC is really debilitating and distracting the ANC-led government from its primary task of reversing the legacy of apartheid and creating a better life for all South Africans.

THE factional fighting within the ANC is really debilitating and distracting the ANC-led government from its primary task of reversing the legacy of apartheid and creating a better life for all South Africans.

Mainly the infighting is exacerbated by the rowdy alliance. It has been argued before that the alliance is on paper only, as the behaviour of certain alliance leaders leaves much to be desired.

This has starkly raised the relevance of the tripartite alliance. Some alliance leaders even openly threatened to split the alliance if the cantankerous Zwelinzima Vavi was charged.

Other similar incidents, such as the Masualle-sponsored (of the SACP) Qoboshiyane, have waged proxy battles in the name of the general secretary of the ANC who happens to be the chairperson of the SACP, and who happens to have fallen out with the ANCYL.

All these ructions will continue for as long as there is dual membership.

The ANC general council need to rationally debate the relevance of of dual membership. Dual membership is destroying the ANC.

The Left will continue to fight for leaders that share their communist views, thinking and principles. This will in the main go against mainstream ANC perspectives.

For the sanity of SA the ANC must deliberate on this important matter.

The ANC and the Left can still remain allies, but the dual membership seems to have reached the end of its relevance.
