Council funds used to buy burgers

THE net is closing in on an IFP mayor who is said to have an extraordinary appetite for burgers, which he consumes at the expense of the taxpayer.

The KwaZulu-Natal mayor is said to satisfy his insatiable appetite for KFC and Steers burgers using municipality money.

This was revealed yesterday by Makhosi Khoza, the chairperson of the provincial standing committee on public accounts (Scopa). Khoza wouldn't name the mayor.

Khoza said the auditor-general (AG) has completed the 2009/2010 financial audits for municipalities, and that her committee, together with municipal Scopas, are going to deal with a range of financial mismanagement issues arising from the AG's reports.

"Working together will go a long way in building the municipal oversight capacity so as to improve the financial position of municipalities, which will lead to better quality and more services for citizens and customers.

"I have learnt with disgust about a mayor of a certain municipality who feeds his burger appetite from the public purse.

"The mayor is said to be nursing his love for Kentucky and Steers burgers at the expense of the public and we have receipts in this regard.

"I'm calling on all public officials to stop abusing the public purse," she said.

Khoza said the available public resources far outstrip the basic services demands of the people.

"Every cent has to be saved, especially to address the water crisis in our province.

"We have a high number of communities that do not have access to clean water.

"As the chairperson of Scopa, together with members of the provincial legislature and municipal Scopas, we are going to work hard to ensure that we tighten all the screws to stop the public purse from bleeding to death," she said.

Khoza assured members of the public that she will soon get all the details and name and shame people like this mayor.

"We have requested the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs to provide detailed information on this saga," she said.
