Addressing pupils and teachers at Westenburg High School in Polokwane, Limpopo Education MEC Dickson Masemola said the province was aiming for a 60percent matric pass rate this year.
"We appeal to pupils and teachers to be punctual and to do your work as required. In that way, we will see an improved performance of children in matric and in the quality of their passes," he said.
Limpopo has performed dismally in the matric exams in the past seven years, making the province one of the worst performers in the country.
In KwaZulu-Natal, education spokesperson Bheki Mlotshwa said: "We have not received any reports of delays or interruption in any school across the province. We can confidently say all schools resumed with classes as expected."
Mkhuleko Hlengwa, spokesperson of the IFP-aligned South African Democratic Student Movement, said: "We wish all pupils and teachers well as they embark on the third term. We hope that they had a relaxing holiday which renewed their energies to face the academic tasks that lie ahead."
Gauteng education department spokesperson Charles Phahlane said they would be launching Saturday classes for matric pupils this weekend.
