AS NEGOTIATIONS between trade unions and the Lepelle Northern Water Board in Limpopo remain deadlocked, threats of a strike by 6000 workers became louder yesterday.
The workers are threatening to strike after wage talks between the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and the board over a 12,5percent wage hike demand failed.
Samwu Limpopo chairperson Mamaila Manthata said the employer was instead offering only 8,5percent for low earners and 11percent for high earners.
He said such an offer undermined the majority of the workers.
"We have rejected their proposal because it favours management and is detrimental to the majority of workers who are still subjected to low wages," Manthata said.
He said the dispute had been referred to the Bargaining Council because the employer was intransigent.
Nehawu provincial secretary Mike Shingange said they were still waiting for answers from the board over their wage increase talks.
The talks are expected to continue on July 30 at the Bargaining Council.
