MID-MORNING talk radio queen and Sowetan columnist, Redi Direko, will once again make her prime-time presence felt when she hosts her own talk show on new DStv channel, Mzansi Magic.
But Direko insists that the show will feature "anything but politics".
The 30 minute show, simply titled 'Redi', will air tonight at 7:30pm on channel 107 and will mark the diminutive host's return to the small screen following her departure from the eNews Channel two months ago.
Direko, who is known to radio listeners for being tough on politicians, celebrities and high-profile personalities, is set to reveal a much gentler side to the one listeners have become accustomed to.
Said Direko: "I've always wanted to present a television show that sparks great dinner time conversation as I believe South Africans are hungry for stories that chart the transformation we have undergone and the successes enjoyed so far."
Direko said she had been toying with the idea of presenting a talk show when she became aware of M-Net's intention to launch Mzansi Magic, a subscription-based channel dedicated solely to local programming.
"It was a coincidence," said Direko when explaining how she and her partners approached M-Net at around the same time the channel's executives contacted her.
"After we got our ideas developed, we approached the channel and I was surprised at how similar our thinking was.
"M-Net has been great in giving us latitude to take charge of the direction the show will be taking."
When Sowetan called her yesterday, Direko and her team where shooting on location in Sandhurst, Johannesburg, and she sounded excited.
"I have never shot outside of a studio. I am so excited, I feel like a little girl," she said.
Tonight's season premiere kicks off a 26-week run that will features topics such the success of the soccer World Cup, among others.
M-Net's Nomphelo Ndzimela said the show features everything South Africans love about Direko.
"She will bring her warmth, her searing intelligence, her sense of humour, her inimitable interviewing style and combine it with a side of her that has yet to fully emerge," said Ndzimela.
