THE Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa will embark on research to address declining standards in the nursing profession.

Union spokesperson Asanda Fongqo said yesterday that it was so concerned about the reports portraying deteriorated standards that it would institute research called Quality of Care.

"The research, led by the Denosa Professional Institute, is committed to using a holistic approach to develop nurses both as professionals and workers," Fongqo said.

The research, he said, was aimed at building nurses' capacity to create a work environment that would allow quality care.

Fongqo said workshops would be conducted nationally to get participants' views on what influences the way they do their work.

"But Denosa is still of the view that the entire health system needs to be interrogated and overhauled if we are to get it in order. This includes human resource issues, tools of service, market-related remuneration and other pressing issues," he said. - Vusi Xaba
