SUNDAY is Mandela Day, when South Africans celebrate the former president's and statesman's legacy.

The Johannesburg Zoo will be one of the places where people can celebrate the day.

The zoo has planned a number of projects which would take 67 minutes to complete.

People can participate in the projects from 10am on July 18, Mandela's 92nd birthday.

Projects such as Behaviour Enrichment - making articles for animals, horticulture, assisting in the nursery with a planting project and animal enclosure cleaning as well as fundraising and education about animals.

This year, like every other year since Mandela's 90th birthday bash in London's Hyde Park in June 2008, celebrations will take place in honour of the man.

The main message of Mandela Day is that people give 67 minutes of their time on the day doing something for charity or serving their communities.

The 67 minutes represent the 67 years Mandela spent in politics, fighting for human rights and a better life for all.

Volunteers are most welcome to help out at the zoo on the day. The first 67 volunteers will be taken.
