NURSING COLLEGE CLOSURE 'UNCALLED FOR'

THE closure of Mmabatho College of Nursing in North West was "uncalled for", the student representative council said yesterday.

Health and social development MEC Rebecca Kasien-yane, pictured, temporarily closed the college on Friday because students were not attending classes.

"Students' nonattendance of classes and continued stay at the college despite concerns being attended to is costing the department greatly, hence my decision to temporarily close the doors of the college.

"The college will remain closed while we continue to engage the student leadership," she said.

Students have not attended classes since June 8 because of the department's failure to address their grievances, SRC spokesperson Lehlohonolo Monama said.

Monama said the closure was uncalled for and the students had not been consulted. He denied that the students had refused to meet Kasienyane on Friday.
