After watching Motsepe at the opening of the musical - its first public performance at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre in Sedibeng - I am convinced the former Isidingo actress is the perfect artist to be Fassie, despite many people having misgivings about the casting.
Since the news about Motsepe landing this role became public, many in showbiz circles argued against her.
They favoured others such as the vocally better talented Winnie Khumalo and Kelly Khumalo.
Motsepe is better known for her acting than singing. But over the weekend her vocal ability was a revelation. Add that to her acting skills and you have a perfect version of Brenda Fassie .
The point is that Mostepe has a tiny body, not that different from Fassie's. She might not have the voice of Fassie, because nobody will ever have it, but she can certainly sing.
In fact, she surprised the capacity crowd with her vocal skills. She got a standing ovation from the impressed audience at the end of the show.
It must have been her ability to sing and act this role, portraying Fassie's complex character, that charmed the audience.
Fassie was sometimes lovely and modest in her personal interaction with fellow musicians, the media and public. But at times extremely rude, arrogant and quite unpredictable.
These are some of the personality traits that defined Fassie. Motsepe portrays some of these Fassie behavioural patterns extremely well in her role as the late Bad Girl of South African pop music.
Supported by an equally talented cast that includes a good band, energetic dancers and backing vocalists, Mabrrr the Musical will certainly endear itself to many a crowd, especially by the time it opens proper at the South African State Theatre in September after its short run at the present venue, which ended on Saturday.
Mabrrr: The Musical focuses on Fassie's remarkable life. It is written by Jerry Mofokeng, with contributions from culture journalist Bongani Madondo.
Mofokeng directs the musical. Funding is by Department of Arts and Culture as part of its 21 World Cup arts projects.
