Cup is over, bring on Olympics

WITH the 2010 Fifa World Cup a roaring success, some people have even begun touting South Africa for the 2020 Olympic Games.

WITH the 2010 Fifa World Cup a roaring success, some people have even begun touting South Africa for the 2020 Olympic Games.

One such optimist is retired footballer Harris Choeu, a talent scout for Mamelodi Sundowns.

"People in other parts of the world still can't believe that South Africa has done it. We have successfully hosted the biggest soccer festival on earth," he bragged yesterday.

"This is a big plus now that there is a talk of one of our cities bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games. There is no way you can't stage the Olympics after hosting the World Cup. South Africans flew the country's flag proudly and supporting Bafana Bafana even when things were not going well for us."

Choeu's sentiments were echoed by former Bafana Bafana midfielder Linda Buthelezi, who said South Africans should be proud of themselves for organising such a great show.

"It was the first time I saw so many South Africans uniting for one purpose."

Beijing Olympics silver medallist Khotso "Crocodile" Mokoena said: "I have never been so proud to be South African."
