SPRINGBOK Sevens coach Paul Treu and SA Under-20 mentor Eric Sauls will guide the national Under-18 High Performance squad that will compete in a series of international friendlies next week.

The junior national side will play France in East London on July 16, a Namibian Invitational XV in George on July 20 and finally England in Port Elizabeth three days later. SA Schools coaches Alridge Mercuur from Boland Rugby Union and Janse van der Ryst from Griquas Country Districts have joined the technical staff.

The squad was selected at the end of the successful Coca-Cola Youth Week in Welkom at the weekend.

The national selectors also roped in Under-18 players from tertiary institutions and rugby clubs.

These games are part of the high-performance programme aimed at nurturing the finest junior rugby players in the country.

Said high performance manager Herman Masimla: "We want to give these youngsters an experience of international competition and we are hopeful they will excel. These players are our future stars."
