tickets for cup final sold out

THERE are no more tickets left for the World Cup final, Fifa said yesterday.

THERE are no more tickets left for the World Cup final, Fifa said yesterday.

Spokesperson Nicolas Maingot said tickets for the final at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Sunday were completely sold out.

There were, however, 2700 category one to four tickets left for the third-place playoff between Germany and Uruguay in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.

Attendance at Fifa fan festivals surpassed the five million mark on Wednesday night.

It stood at 5358267 people watching soccer at fan fests in South Africa and across the globe.

In Germany, about 350000 fans watched their national team lose to Spain at the Fifa fan fest in Berlin on Wednesday night, while in Durban, 56836 people attended the fan fest for the game.

Maingot said the number of people at the stadiums in South Africa would not surpass the number who attended in Germany in the last World Cup in 2006.

The attendance at the first World Cup on the African continent, however, was only the third to have crossed the three- million mark.

Meanwhile, local organising committee spokesperson Jermaine Craig referred all queries on the flight delays at Durban Airport on Wednesday night to the Airports Company of SA, saying the body was due to release a statement later yesterday.

On the matter of a fan who managed to get onto the pitch during the semifinal in Durban on Wednesday, Maingot said it was "not acceptable" that a fan could find their way onto the pitch.

"It should not happen, we will tighten the controls for the next two games," he said.

He referred all further queries about that specific incident to the police, who were dealing with the matter. - Sapa
