SAFA have commended South Africans for coming to the party in big numbers to contribute to the success of the historic World Cup final on Sunday.

"The people of South Africa have been simply the best since we started with the preparations for the World Cup," Safa chief executive Leslie Sedibe said.

"As we approach the end of the tournament, we want to say a big thank you to them for their support. People in other African countries and overseas have also been really good.

" We also want to thank our government that delivered on all the 17 guarantees of the World Cup.

"South Africa now boasts world class freeways, airports, hospitals and stadiums," Sedibe said.

"The Fly the Flag campaign by the Department of Arts and Culture and using the World Cup to educate South Africans about national symbols was a noble idea.

"Bafana Bafana may have been eliminated early in the tournament but we won as a country by staging a successful World Cup. Many who doubted us are now our supporters ."

Sedibe's sentiments were echoed by singer Tshedi Mholo who said: "I never felt so proud to be South African in my life. The Fly the Flag and Football Friday campaigns were incredible.

"The past four weeks have been superb."

Fan Tshepo Mapiti, who was in Cape Town for the World Cup, said: "The World Cup was a good advert. We must now go for the Olympic Games."
