A HUNDRED cases have ended with convictions in the World Cup courts sice the tournament started on June 11.
Gauteng has the highest number of cases heard and the most convictions at 30, followed by the Western Cape with 26. So far, the 56 courts across the country have heard 216 cases.
The courts were launched two weeks before the tournament resumed and have proved to be a success.
"Prosecuting these cases has been a remarkable success if one takes into consideration the excellent job done by police, prosecutors as well as the court officials working in these courts," said NPA spokesperson Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga.
The courts operate from 7.30am to 11pm, seven days a week. The staff includes 93 foreign language interpreters, 260 prosecutors, 110 magistrates and 110 Legal Aid Board lawyers.
Limpopo has had only one case, which resulted in a conviction, while KwaZulu-Natal has had only two cases.
The cases vary from robbery, theft, possession of drugs, drunk driving and fraud.
The courts will continue operating two weeks after the tournament has ended.
