Communists slam MEC

THE Young Communist League in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday lambasted the stance taken by MEC for economic development and tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu against Ithala group chief executive Sipho Shabalala.

Shabalala was only given a written warning by Mabuyakhulu for flouting tender regulations in the awarding of a R169million tender to a relatively unknown company, Bombe Chitey Construction Projects.

The company is owned by Durban businessman Lungelo Radebe.

YCL provincial spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said the YCL PEC deliberated on the issue and felt that Mabuyakhulu should have acted differently.

"The warning to Shabalala was a mere cover-up. He should be investigated and if he is found to be in the wrong he must leave," Mndebele said.

Department of Economic Development and Tourism spokesperson Bheko Madlala said Mabuyakhulu had dealt with the matter.

"The MEC has dealt with this matter," he said. "But we will engage the YCL using the appropriate channels."
