Parents stand by principal

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for education Senzo Mchunu has lashed out at parents for taking sides over the department's decision to fire a school principal for misconduct.

Addressing parents in Kokstad at Carl Malcomess High School over the dismissal of the school principal, Mchunu said Mbulelo Mankae was fired by the department after allegations that he illegally promoted failed Grade 11 pupils to Grade 12.

Mankae's expulsion angered the community of Kokstad and resulted in a massive protest that included pupils from various schools.

"Parents should stop disrupting teaching and learning if they have issues with the department. Children's right to better education should be protected," Mchunu said.

He said Mankae had every right to explore other avenues to challenge the decision taken against him.

Mchunu was accompanied by head of department Cassius Lubisi, who explained why Mankae was fired. Lubisi said Mankae had pleaded guilty to charges levelled at him.

Despite the explanation parents and members of the school governing body (SGB) were still not convinced.

SGB chairperson Neph Juqu said they would continue supporting Mankae so that he could return to work. He also said they were not informed about the process of the investigations.
