PITSO THE NEW BAFANA COACH

THE South African Football Association has given Bafana Bafana assistant coach Pitso "Jingles" Mosimane the task of guiding the senior national team after the World Cup, as predicted by Sowetan on Wednesday.

The decision was taken by the powerful national executive committee, which recommended Mosimane for the job at their meeting in Sandton yesterday.

Sowetan has learnt that the meeting to recommend Mosimane lasted only a few hours as he has the full support of most Safa executive members.

A few members wanted Ephraim Mashaba for the job but the suggestion was dismissed because Mashaba has already signed a contract with Safa to coach the national Under-23 side.

Addressing a media briefing in Sandton, Safa president Kirsten Nematandani said the executive were sticking to their guns after promising to appoint a South African to guide Bafana.

"We have mandated the technical committee to meet Mr Mosimane. He must have unique responsibility to build on the legacy of the Bafana Bafana team in the 2010 World Cup. He must engage the PSL to ensure that the players are kept physically fit and also interact with foreign-based players.

"Should Mr Mosimane accept the job, the chief executive officer (Leslie Sedibe) has been mandated to negotiate with him and this will include key performance areas. The technical committee gave us an undertaking that the process will be completed in less than two weeks."

Committee members include convenor Fanyana Sibanyoni, Jomo Sono, Gavin Hunt, Clive Barker, Ted Dumitru, Simon Ngomane, Serame Letsoaka and Harold Legodi.

Safa deputy president Mandla Mazibuko said: "I have no doubt that Bafana Bafana will not only qualify for the 2012 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, and 2014 World Cup, but will also fare well in these tournaments."

Sedibe said he had spoken to Mosimane, who is keen on the job.

"Pitso has a clear vision, which he wants to share with the association."

Bafana will play a friendly on August 11 against as yet unnamed opponents in preparation for the opening 2012 Afcon qualifier against Niger at home in September.
