The yardstick is the first and well-attended Art Bouquet-organised kiddies' gig held on Mary Fitzgerald Square and the Newtown Cultural Concourse on Wednesday .
This is a project of the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund-backed Kwesukela Storytelling Academy, Storytelling Project and Storytelling Festival.
It is for children between three and 16 and features workshops on beat-boxing, grafitti writing, tattooing, drumming, marimba playing, fun and games and interacting with clowns and stilt-walkers.
The main event is storytelling by emerging storytellers and established ones such as Gcina Mhlophe, Nomsa Mdlalose and Masoja Msiza.
Former Boom Shaka star, television variety show presenter and actress Thembi Seete were there this week with her high-energy song and dance acts. Mhlophe had another accomplished storytelling rendition highlighting the wisdom of being humble in inter-personal relationships.
Children can bring along older siblings, parents and guardians. Festival leader Nomsa Mdlalose's Kwesukela Storytelling Academy graduates will help teach young and old the finer points of storytelling.
Meanwhile, 24 emerging storytellers are entertaining at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, the Irish Museum, Polokwane, Local History Museum, Durban and Freedom Park, Pretoria.
They are relating African and South African stories encompassing African soccer and its heroes and myths and legends about soccer under the theme:When People Forget, Story Remembers.
