AS EXPECTED, Manqoba Mngqithi has been appointed AmaZulu's new coach.
The appointment of Mngqithi is no surprise. Sowetan reported with conviction on Wednesday that the former Lamontville Golden Arrows mentor was heading to Usuthu.
The amiable former schoolteacher was confirmed by AmaZulu management as their new coach yesterday.
Interestingly then, Mngqithi pleaded ignorance about the move to AmaZulu. He has signed a three-year deal with Usuthu with the option to renew the contract for a further two seasons.
He will be assisted by Fani "Didiza" Madida and it is not clear what will become of current assistant coach Calvin Petersen.
Mngqithi, who steered Abafana Bes'thende to MTN8 glory last year, was roped into the Usuthu kraal after the surprise expulsion of Neil "Mokoko" Tovey on Monday.
"I am happy to be joining a club with such a rich history. This is a team I grew up supporting and am excited to be part of it," Mngqithi said.
"I will give my all to the club. I could have chosen a club in Gauteng but opted for AmaZulu because I believe they are a top side with excellent structures and development."
He said that contrary to media speculation, he spoke to the club's management only last month.
AmaZulu's management wanted to give Tovey the boot as early as December but decided to stick with him until the end of the season. This was confirmed yesterday by AmaZulu director Graham O'Connor.
"We were not impressed with Tovey's performance but decided to give him a long rope to hang himself for the sake of the team," O'Connor said.
Tovey steered AmaZulu to the Nedbank Cup final last year, their first final in close to two decades.
